Hall-Garcia Cardiology Associates affiliated with the Texas Heart Institute Dr. Virendra S. Mathur specializes in the management of coronary artery disease and, particularly, balloon angioplasty. He has been
teaching at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, for over 25 years and is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. Formerly, he was the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratory at the VA Hospital in Houston and then became the Director of the Clayton Foundation Cardiovascular Laboratory at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital-Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Texas. He
served in that capacity for ten years. He has been very active in cardiovascular research, and has been at the leading edge of new technology and innovations. Currently he is a member of the
attending staff, Cardiology Section of St. Luke's Hospital, Houston, Texas, and cardiologist at the Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Texas.
Dr. Mathur is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine as well as in the subspecialty of Cardiovascular Diseases. He received his undergraduate training at
King George's Medical College in India where he was the recipient of several honors and awards including two gold medals for being the Best Student in Medicine as well as a gold
medal for the best research work as a post-graduate student in medicine. After completing the training in Internal Medicine in India, he completed a Fellowship in Cardiology at Harvard
Medical School at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and Tufts University in Boston City Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts.
After completion of his training he moved to Houston and has been associated with Baylor College of Medicine ever since, and has been part of the Texas Heart Institute for over 20 years.
Dr. Mathur published the first report in the world literature validating the beneficial effects of coronary bypass surgery (Publications No. 42, 44, 52, 62 and 67). Coronary bypass surgery is
the most common heart operation today because its benefits have been proven on numerous occasions since the original study. Along with Dr. Ali Massumi, he was one of the first
cardiologists to introduce coronary balloon angioplasty in Houston, Texas. Later, in association with Dr. Massumi, Dr. Mathur was the first one to pioneer balloon valvuloplasty for narrowed
heart valves. Since then, he has been involved in the training of over 200 specialists, including several specialists from out-of-town, out-of-state and out-of-country, and has helped several
physicians establish cardiac catheterization laboratories throughout the world. He has received more than 20 awards in recognition of these services.
Because of his clinical skills as well as his special skills in cardiac catheterization laboratory and in balloon angioplasty, Dr. Mathur routinely draws patients not only from Houston and Texas but
from all parts of the country and from several foreign countries every year. Several influential people, including Heads of State, travel thousands of miles to receive advice and treatment
from Dr. Mathur in Houston. He is very much liked by his patients and their families, as he is always willing to lend an ear to listen to their complaints and problems. He has been very active
in community affairs and is involved in several charities throughout the state and several national organizations.
Dr. Mathur has been very active in research and teaching and he has authored or co-authored more than 150 publications. Some of the important ones are listed here. He has also been a
very sought-after teacher, and on two separate occasions he was voted to be the Outstanding Teaching and Cardiology Staff Member of the Texas Heart Institute. . |
